Earlier today at the ROOTS Project Headquarters in Abuko, the ROOTS Project held an orientation session for the second batch of youths from the Gambia Songhai Initiative (GSI) under the Youth Placement Program.
Nine (9) young people have been assigned to support ROOTS beneficiary vegetable gardens across various communities. The placement aims to empower women vegetable farmers by improving production techniques, record keeping, and year-round garden management.
Speaking at the event, Madam Amie Badgie of GSI expressed her pride and confidence in the new cohort, reminding them that their selection was possible because the first batch performed exceptionally well. She encouraged them to serve as ambassadors of GSI and uphold the values of discipline, commitment, and service.
Mr. Saine, Project Coordinator of GSI, also thanked the ROOTS Project for the continued partnership, noting that the initiative is creating meaningful pathways for youth participation in agriculture. “We believe you will make us proud. Use this opportunity to learn, serve, and grow,” he told the participants.
On behalf of the ROOTS Project, Mr. Lamin Darboe, Senior Capacity Strengthening & Advisory Officer / Head of Component 1, highlighted that the ROOTS–GSI partnership began in 2021 and continues to deliver results.
He noted that ROOTS aims for 25% youth participation, and the collaboration with GSI shows that young people have a critical role in transforming agriculture.
He reminded the youths that:
They will work directly with women vegetable farmers
Apply the knowledge gained from GSI to improve production techniques
Support the gardens on climate-smart practices, proper spacing, production planning, water management and botanical preparations
Assist farmers in maintaining records of yields and production activities
He added that the first batch made a lasting impact, with communities still requesting their return. “Expectations are high,” he emphasized. “The ROOTS Regional Teams and the Regional Agriculture Directorate will support you every step of the way.”
Key Roles of the Placed Youths:
Guide farmers on climate-smart and environmentally friendly production practices
Ensure year-round garden utilisation, including rainy season production
Keep production/yield records and maintain beneficiary data
Support garden management and facility maintenance
Submit monthly and quarterly activity reports
This initiative reflects ROOTS’ continued commitment to youth empowerment, agricultural innovation, and community development—proving once again that when youth are given the opportunity, they deliver impact.
