I have the pleasure to welcome you to the ROOTS Project website. The website is intended to provide up to date information about what ROOTS is all about, how it is designed and implemented, what are the successes and challenges, and most importantly how can beneficiaries access support in line with the Project design and objectives.
ROOTS was launched on 09 February 2021 by His Excellency President Adama Barrow, which underscores the national significance of the Project. Our development objective is fully aligned with the national goals of the country, specifically the National Development Plan (NDP), Gambia National Agricultural Investment Plan (GNAIP), and The Gambia National Climate Change Policy (2016 – 2025). ROOTS aims to increase agricultural productivity and access to markets for enhanced food security and nutrition, and resilience of family farms and farmer organizations At international level, ROOTS is in line with the African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), as well as the Agenda 2063 and 2030 Sustainable Development Goals

Brief description of ROOTS:
The Resilience of Organizations for Transformative Smallholder Agriculture Project (ROOTS) was launched on 09 February 2021, with co-funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), the GEF Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Government of the Gambia and the Project’s beneficiaries.
The main goal of ROOTS is to improve food security, nutrition and resilience of smallholder farmers to climate change in The Gambia. Its development objective is to increase agricultural productivity and access to markets for enhanced food security and nutrition and for the resilience of family farms and Farming Organizations. To achieve its objectives, the project will support targeted investments in infrastructure and the technical and organizational capacities of farmers’ organizations, particularly youth and women.




Project Components
Component 1: Agricultural productivity and adaptation to climate change
The Project will: (i) consolidate 1,300ha of existing poorly performing tidal irrigation and develop 2,800ha of new tidal irrigation on existing agricultural lands (average size per community land between 25 and 75ha

This componet aims to assist FOs supported at the level of production in componet 1 to enter into inclusive commercial partnership with other value-chain actors throught the public private procducers’ partnership and to promote value-addition processing. The project will enhance and scale-up of the agriculture value-chain platform(AVIP) approach to bring together key valuechain stakeholders (producers, processors, traders, transporters) around rice and vegetable value-chains at local level.

The project will support policy dialogue and southsouth and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) activities. It will act as a facilitator and finance 3 policy dialogue round tables and forums involving FOs (NACOFAG, NAWFA), private sector representatives and public sector.
